Imaginarium is offering some tips to help with something that all parents struggle with: getting your kids to be happier.
- Work on their emotional intelligence. Help them express their emotions and identify them through open lines of communication. This lets you teach them to manage their emotions and solve problems calmly. Learn tolerate distress to avoid future quarrels due to mounting concerns. Once you’ve shown them the way, you must let them begin to face their problems alone.
- Be thankful and optimistic. Teach them to value every little thing they have instead of focusing on what they don’t have.
- Highlight their virtues and make them understand that nobody’s perfect. Notice the positive and negative to know how to work with it.
- Set rules. Society operates under rules that we all must follow, so it is essential to impose some rules at home as well to make children understand that certain behaviour is unacceptable and that misbehaving could have consequences.
- The daily routine is key. It is recommended to establish a daily routine starting when they’re babies. This way children develop certain habits that help them understand learning and behaviour guidelines as well as, for instance, the times needed for each activity and when is the best time to do it.
- Play together: Having fun together is a way of improving children’s connection with their parents and making everybody feel happy, either at home or outdoors. They will learn new skills like sharing, improve their cognitive and motor skills, and build their self-esteem and creativity, all while enjoying happy moments.
- Avoid frustration. You can’t always get what you want, and that’s the first lesson they need to learn. Everything takes time and we need to be patient. Sometimes there will be things they can’t have for whatever reason, and that’s when parents need to encourage them to value what they do have, and if they still have a chance, to be inspired to keep trying.
- Reinforce the positive. Use positive messages to congratulate every bit of progress or good attitude. This will improve their self-esteem and encourage them to repeat the behaviour.
- No to stress. Sometimes in our busy lives adults can stress kids out by forcing them to hurry while doing certain things. We recommend getting up earlier in the morning, if necessary, to slow things down a bit, and be able to start the day with a smile.
